Coronation Street's Bernie Winter, played by actress Jane Hazlegrove, has become a fan favourite since her arrival in Weatherfield four years ago. Initially described as an "old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit", she's shown her strength as the straight-talking mum of Gemma Winter and Paul Foreman.
The soap star has been at the heart of some huge storylines since joining the hit ITV soap in 2019. Earlier this year viewers saw a softer side to Bernie after learning that her son Paul (Peter Ash) was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a life-limiting disease.
In heartbreaking scenes, Paul tearfully admitted to his sister and mother that he was dying after they noticed his unusual quietness and resistance. Jane previously opened up about her personal loss as her character faced the tragic storyline. She told Inside Soap: "I was very upset [when I found out about the storyline] as I adore Peter Ash [who plays Paul Foreman] so I was gutted as this meant he would be going.
My Corrie family are a tight unit. I'm so lucky to work with them all." Jane went on to reveal that her own father's passing had heightened her emotions, saying: "I lost my dad recently, so I know what this kind of grief is like. It has been very emotional." Emmerdale wife Away from the soap, Jane has the support of her wife and fellow soap actress Isobel Middleton.
Speaking to Lorraine Kelly in 2019, she gushed about her "beautiful" wife and joked: "We've not [worked alongside each other], which is probably why we're still together. She's sensational, a really beautiful woman. I am very blessed." "We relocated back to Manchester last year, before [Corrie].
