This year, Scotland has once again seen a particularly chilly winter and with no signs of things heating up, many will be looking for cheap ways to stay warm.
The first port of call is to switch on the central heating, but if you're looking for a quick blast of warmth, you may want to look to other options. Two popular warming alternatives are the portable heater and the electric blanket, but there is the question of which is cheaper to run.
In a world of ever-changing energy prices, the last thing Brits want is to see their bills rise, so knowing which option is more cost effective is important. So, does it cost less to run an electric blanket compared to a portable heater? According to Uswitch, the answer is yes - by a lot.
The utility experts have found that based on an average use of 147.3 minutes a week, an electric blanket would cost £4.16 in total. In contrast, a portable heater would rack up £52, despite being used an average 88.6 minutes in seven days.
So, if you're looking for a useful heating appliance which won't break the bank, you may want to consider an electric blanket.
Again, central heating is likely your best option and you can leave on a timer so that your home is warm when you get in, but a blanket could be a useful addition should the budget allow.
However, the Scottish Fire and Rescue service have previously issued a warning about electric blankets, as they can be a fire risk. Guidance states that you should never leave them on at night unless marked 'suitable for all night use'.
