Theo Bair admits comparisons with Lionel Messi from Motherwell fans gave him a chuckle after copping flak earlier in the season.
The Fir Park frontman hit form before the break with three goals in two games – including a delicious dink against Livi that had punters making links to the Argentina great. Bair is just thrilled the fans stuck by him after nine games without a goal and he’s out to pick up the hot streak in the Scottish Cup against Alloa today.
The Canadian said: “I saw a couple of those comments. I found it funny. There is good and bad but I’m glad the supporters have shown me some faith. I want to work hard for the club but it’s nice to be appreciated. I know I’ve got a lot of stick over the earlier games, due to the lack of goals. I don’t deny it, but I always felt I had it in me. I wouldn’t call it a purple patch, I’d say I’m performing to the level that I’d hope to perform to.
“I just hope to continue it. I wasn’t paying attention to it but any striker knows if they are not scoring they will get stick. Criticism is also there because people know you can do better.
“I have a lot of confidence in myself and I’m mentally strong. The mental side is probably 90 percent and I knew if I kept listening to the gaffer and trusting my teammates, it would eventually click. The gaffer has given me a lot of chances this season and I’m happy to repay him.”
Bair insisted the Scottish cold snap will be a breeze this weekend after his shutdown return to his homeland. He said: “I went home to Canada to see the family. It was colder there. It got to minus 14, which is still not the coldest it gets there.
