A warning has been issued to homeowners in Greater Manchester as the Japanese knotweed hotspot areas have been revealed. New data has shown a total of 2,807 infestations across the region this year, with one area named as the second-worst affected location in England and Wales.
As Japanese knotweed’s summer growth period draws to a close, invasive plant specialist Environet has looked at the latest data from its live online tracker to reveal this year’s Japanese knotweed hotspots. Described as the UK’s 'most invasive plant', it can damage properties, be extremely difficult and costly to remove and could knock value off your home when it comes to selling it.
With almost 58,000 known infestations across the country, new data has revealed that Bolton, Manchester and Bury are the top three worst-affected areas in our region. Bolton is the main hotspot area, with a total of 1,010 infestations this year.

Also amongst the affected areas are Wigan, Stockport, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford, with reported infestations ranging between 239 and 40. The Japanese Knotweed Heatmap alerts homeowners to the risk level in their local area, as you can enter your postcode to discover the number of verified knotweed sightings near you.
