Trafford council is considering closing its town hall one day a week as well as ‘changes’ to the borough’s children and adult services as it prepares to finalise its budget for 2024-25. A meeting of the authority’s executive will on Monday (January 29) consider a review by Trafford’s scrutiny committee chair Coun David Acton of the budget proposals.
Ahead of that meeting Coun Jo Harding, Trafford’s executive member for finance, change and governance, was adamant no final decisions had been made, as the authority seeks to plug a £1.75million budget gap. “We’ve been clear that we’ve written to Government ministers pointing out that we are one of the lowest funded authorities in the country,” she said.
“The process is ongoing and nothing has been finalised yet. Lots of things are being thrown into the mix, but no decisions have been made. “We know that 40 Conservative MPs have told the Chancellor that local government is asking for many councils.”

Included in the recommendations at Monday’s executive meeting are ‘full lobbying plans’ to the Government alongside other local authorities. Another is: “That the executive explores the closure of Trafford Town Hall once a week and provides the scrutiny committee with any negative impacts that are found from this change if they occur.”
Concern has also been expressed about Trafford’s diminishing reserves, which have been used to bolster services. The report also recommends that the ‘executive looks to increase the transparency on the service management process in both children and adult services and highlight such changes to a future meeting of the scrutiny committee’.
