Football could undergo yet another change to its laws, with the offside rule potentially being adapted in a bid to make decisions simpler for officials. The proposal, which is being driven by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in his role as FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, is designed to make the rule easier to understand and less controversial.
The current offside rule states that a player is offside when they are in the opponents' half and, when the ball is played, any part of the body is closer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. Currently, a player can be adjudged to be offside if any part of their body - apart from the hands or arm - is ahead of the second-last opponent, including the goalkeeper.
But the new proposal for how the rule is interpreted will see that changed to the whole goal-scoring body of the player. This means that if any part of the body is behind the last defender, the attacker will remain onside, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The new rule is set to be trialled in the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy, with the results of the trial to be assessed before a potential implementation throughout world football including the Premier League, meaning Manchester City and Manchester United could be impacted. This is not the first time Wenger has proposed a radical change to the game, with the Frenchman having suggested a reduction in match length to 60 minutes, as well as a two-year World Cup cycle, neither of which have yet been implemented.
Wenger also caused controversy last year with the proposal that throw-ins should be ditched and replaced by a 'kick-in'. The
