Mobile phone customers on EE, O2, Three and Vodafone have been warned that they face a big price hike in the coming months, with some expected to pay as much as £120 more over the duration of their contract.
Consumer watchdog Which? said customers on Sim-only contracts face 'unpredictable' and 'unjust' price rises in the middle of their contracts, a practice which they say should be banned by Ofcom.
In April, phone companies are allowed to hike their prices by a certain percentage, which is based on inflation - either the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the Retail Price Index (RPI) - plus an additional 3.9 per cent. These hikes can only be avoided if customers cancel their contracts while they are still under them - but that can see them facing early exit fees of up to almost £300.

Which? has predicted how much EE, O2, Three and Vodafone Sim-only customers could see their bills increase by in 2024 and over the course of their contract, compared to the amount they were quoted when they originally signed up. On average, EE, Three and Vodafone customers could see increases of more than eight per cent in 2024 while O2 customers could see rises of over 10 per cent, Which? said.
O2 and EE customers could see annual increases of more than £20 in 2024, while Three customers could see a smaller annual price hike of £15.88 on average.
The below table shows Which?'s projected rise in 2024 on a 12-month unlimited data Sim-only contract - and the amount that would equate to in a year.
