Susanna Reid was quick to offer her support to Ed Balls as he gave an update on his health during Tuesday's edition of ITV's Good Morning Britain.
The former politician, aged 57, and his co-host Susanna, aged 53, had earlier discussed the issue of disposable vapes and children under 15 with England's Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, the Mirror reports.
Following the interview, Susanna queried Ed about his hoarse voice, asking, "Have you been smoking 20 a day? Your voice is really damaged!"
Ed responded apologetically, "I'm really sorry, is it annoying?"
Reassuring him, Susanna said, "No, you don't need to apologise! It happens to all of us, I had to take time off work because I lost my voice!"
Ed then shared that he believes the persistent cough is a remnant from a flu-like illness he experienced a month prior, adding, "I think it's going round, I had a kind of fluey thing a month ago and the cough has persisted. It doesn't go away, it lives in my throat. I apologise!"
To which Susanna humorously replied, "I have heard people say, it's the 100 day cough! There's no need to apologise, it does just sound like you're a chain smoker. Can you confirm or deny?"
Ed clarified, "I don't smoke and I don't vape! I'm very sorry for my husky voice, it's really annoying!"
Susanna playfully countered, "No, I like the husky voice!"
The conversation came after Susanna expressed her bemusement on Monday's show over finding glitter scattered throughout her dressing room and the ITV studios, a sparkly aftermath of Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway's emotional season finale.
Susanna and her co-host Richard Arnold decided to chat with fellow presenter Andi Peters about the finale after his first appearance during the Saturday spectacular.
