George Galloway claims he is in talks with three Labour MPs and a member of the House of Lords whom he hopes to recruit to his party. The Rochdale MP and Workers Party of Britain leader warned a 'significant number' of councillors could also join by next week.
It comes as the first wave of parliamentary candidates selected to stand for the Workers Party - including 13 in Greater Manchester - was announced today (April 30). Among them is former England cricketer Monty Panesar who will be running to be an MP in London.
Mr Galloway said 500 candidates have now been selected to stand for his party at the general election. So far, the Workers Party has named parliamentary candidates in 170 constituencies, saying that more candidates are set to be announced in the coming weeks.

However, this 'first wave' list includes constituencies where the party will not be fielding candidates and instead support a sitting MP, such as former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The party has said the selection process for a large number of other seats is still running.
Speaking at a press conference outside Parliament this afternoon (April 30), Mr Galloway said he would like to field 650 candidates - one in every constituency in the UK. He told the media, bar a 'small number' of exceptions, the party will have candidates in every constituency in England, will be 'some way short' in Scotland and Wales, and 'as a matter of principle', none in the 'North of Ireland'.
