Richard Madeley has been labelled a 'hypocrite' after he criticised a shoplifter and demanded 'proof' that people are starving whilst presenting Good Morning Britain.
The debate took place on Monday's episode of the ITV show, which was celebrating its tenth anniversary. The discussion was sparked by members of the Everybody Eats campaign who had taken food to replenish food bank supplies without paying for it.
Luke, an activist supporting the Eats Everything movement, was a guest on the show. Discussing the issue with show host Richard and Susanna Reid, he argued: "People are getting desperate and they need help."
However, Richard questioned his use of the term "starving" - as reports the Mirror. He stated: "You've used the word starving, you've said that people are starving and you're helping to prevent starvation - that's a very strong word."
He then reminded Luke that the definition of the term implies a "risk of imminent death", before asking: "It's not that bad is it?".
Despite Luke's insistence, Richard remained sceptical. "Starving to death? There haven't been any inquests for anyone's who's starved to death", he maintained, demanding evidence to back up Luke's claims. This led to a backlash from ITV viewers.
"Arghhhh Madeley asking for proof that people are starving to death. Insufferable wind bag. Madeley was a shoplifter and now sits there like some 2nd coming of Jesus", one infuriated viewer voiced on Twitter. Another echoed: "Richard Madeley really tripling down in denial that people are starving in the UK is something."
A third wrote: "So not shoplifter Richard Madeley getting on his high horse AGAIN about shoplifting? ! What a plank he is. How is he even on Telly still?".
