A dog left in 'considerable pain and discomfort' has been put down after being abandoned by a Scots roadside.
The pooch was found off the A96 and handed into the nearby Scottish SPCA centre in Banchory, Aberdeenshire on Tuesday, May 10.
An elderly black and white spaniel, she was found in very poor condition and also had severe dental disease and dry eye.
She also had extremely overgrown nails including one which was so long that it was curling back into the pad of her paw.
The wound had been infected and covered with an old, bloody bandage.
The dog was not chipped or wearing a collar when she was found.
Scottish SPCA inspector Kathryn McCallum said: “Sadly, due to a large mass that was found during her examination, the decision was taken to put the dog to sleep and end her suffering on veterinary advice.
“We understand that people’s circumstances can change, but this is not the right way to give up an animal.
"The dog would have been caused a great deal of unnecessary distress at a time when she was already in considerable pain and discomfort.
“We are urging anyone who recognises this dog, or has any information to please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
If anyone is concerned about an animal, the Scottish SPCA's confidential animal helpline can be contacted on 03000 999 999.
