Cristiano Ronaldo netted his first goal of 2022 on Wednesday as Manchester United snapped out of a three-game winless run with an important 2-0 victory over Brighton.
It was a far-from vintage display for Ralf Rangnick’s side, with the Seagulls proving to be a tough and robust unit to overcome, particularly before Lewis Dunk’s red card.
However early in the second half, some good pressing from Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes led to a costly turnover for the visitors deep inside their own half. Ronaldo latched onto the resulting loose ball and drove at the Brighton defence before firing his effort past the hapless Robert Sanchez.
That proved to be Ronaldo’s ninth league goal of the season, and arguably one of his most important. Not just because it broke the deadlock in a crucial game for United, but also to alleviate the mounting pressure that has come on the Portuguese's shoulders in recent weeks.
United’s dubious recent form has led to growing unrest among fans with Rangnick and key players all coming under scrutiny.
Despite all that Ronaldo has achieved in the game, he’s been unable to escape some of the criticism aimed towards the team and wider questions, around whether his talents are finally starting to wane, have been raised.
The fact Ronaldo can still compete at this level at the age of 37 is a testament to his own discipline, work ethic and ability. However, adjustments have been made at United to accommodate him.
He’s now considered purely as a goalscorer, with any influence in other areas only minimal at best. And while he remains a ruthless finisher, this is fine.
However, his recent goalscoring record looks fairly unremarkable and, in truth, so does his finishing when compared to league rivals
