Roy Keane believes Manchester United will need "a lot more" than Cristiano Ronaldo if they are to return to their Premier League perch.
Pre-season expectations were high after United completed the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, as well as Ronaldo, in the summer. But soon the belief faded with the Portugal star, and he and his United teammate have come in for plenty of criticism.
As it stands, the United remain in a good position to qualify for the Champions League, but they are a long way behind rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, who are again competing for the title.
But former United skipper Keane has hit back at claims that Ronaldo alone should have pushed the club back to the top.
"The hardest part of football is scoring goals, by far. Defending is quite easy when you've got a bit of a brain and you're sliding across and you're stopping people," Keane told Gary Neville’s The Overlap YouTube channel.
"But to create week-in, week-out and this United team is not that strong.
"He's still a quality player and he's one of the world's greatest but he was never going to get United back to winning titles.
"United need a lot more than Ronaldo to get back to winning league titles."
With Ralf Rangnick's side without a chance in the title race this season, their wait to lift the English top-flight extends to its ninth year with Sir Alex Ferguson the last man to claim such glory.
