It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but not for those who live on Coronation Street. As the festivity begins, there’s a big departure, a revenge plot and a return - producer of the ITV soap, Iain MacLeod spills what’s in store at the end of 2023. “We’re building towards an exit for Peter Barlow [Chris Gascoyne] which is brilliant and bittersweet,” reveals Iain.
“We often think of Peter and Carla Connor [Alison King] as the kind of Burton and Taylor of the cobbles and we wanted to have this grand scale, highly emotional, very nuanced, realistic ending which is the culmination of a decade long love story.” As a result of Peter’s exit, there will be a new face to see Carla. Britain’s Got Talent star Jack Carroll will make his debut as Bobby, Carla’s nephew. “It was born of a desire not to let Carla tread water for too long,” explains Iain.
“Suddenly Bobby, Rob Donovan’s son, turns up, who Carla didn’t know existed and he is causing all sorts of trouble. "Long-term, Bobby is surprisingly in the centre of our biggest story next year.” One of the biggest love triangles of this year has been between Daniel Osborne (Rob Mallard), Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) and Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott). But it’s about to get even more complicated with the return of Daniel’s ex, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon).
“Bethany obviously has lots of history with Daniel and that very much sharpens Daisy’s focus in terms of how she feels,” says Iain. “As for Daisy and Bethany, they’re evenly matched. So it’s a really heavyweight kind of tussle between these two women.
