After millions of viewers tuned in to watch Coronation Street villain Stephen Reid finally receive his just desserts at the end of this year’s Super Soap Week, a grisly end at the hands of Peter Barlow seemed to be exactly what the serial killer deserved. However, while Stephen’s death came as no surprise to many viewers, it did set in motion a chain of events that have seemingly sealed cobbles favourite Peter Barlow’s exit from the show.
As regular viewers will know, Stephen’s death came at the hands of the cab driver on Friday’s edition of the soap, after he had publicly come clean to the entire street about a string of crimes he was responsible for, including the murders of Rufus Donahue and Teddy and Leo Thompkins. Keen to avoid being brought to justice for his crimes, Stephen attempted to flee, however during his escape attempt, he held his former love interest Jenny Connor hostage, prompting Peter to intervene.
In unexpected scenes, Peter was seen driving his minicab into the killer, at speed, sending Stephen crashing to the floor in a shocking culmination of the nail biting storyline. As a result of the crash, Stephen died at the scene - something which Stephen’s mother Audrey Roberts insisted was an act of “cold blooded murder.” And, as new images confirm, the police seem to agree with Audrey, as Peter is set to be arrested for Stephen’s death in scenes due to air on Monday.
