Coronation Street fans’ minds were finally put to rest last night, when it was revealed that Joel was the one who really murdered Lauren Bolton. Lauren, played by actress Cait Fitton disappeared in February, as Roy Cropper was falsely accused of her murder. His innocent act of cleaning her flat raised suspicions with the residents of Weatherfield, with many believing he was guilty.
In Thursday night's harrowing finale to the mystery, viewers saw known abuser, Nathan Curtis, arrested for the murder. As Joel Deering acted as his lawyer, flashbacks suggested Nathan was the culprit. However, in a shock twist later in the episode, it was revealed that Joel was the actual killer.
After Nathan’s arrest, innocent Roy’s friends and family were hopeful he would get released from prison. His arrest was unbeknownst to Roy, who was being forced to hang himself by Griff at knifepoint, but not before he begged to ring Nina to say goodbye. During the emotional ‘final call’, Nina shared the news that Roy was being released, as Nathan had been charged.
As police stormed in, Roy was freed and headed back to his welcome home party at the café. As the character was greeted with a touching speech from Evelyn, many viewers noticed that many of his friends and family were missing from the big occasion. Viewers soon questioned where the likes of "Ken, Mary, Stu, Brian, Shona, Bernie, Fiz, etc," were, as others pointed out he and Ken used to be “best pals”.
