Winter illnesses such as flu, RSV and norovirus are on the rise with health experts warning cases could only increase amid Christmas festivities.
We may only be in the early days of December, but winter bugs are already surging according to NHS data. Flu patients needing hospital treatment have shot up in half a week whilst NHS England has reported an increase of norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
The days of restricted gatherings are behind us and the increasing cases are "no surprise" according to Prof Julian Redhead, NHS England's director for emergency care.
As reported by The Mirror, Prof Redhead explained: "This latest data will come as no surprise to those of us working on the frontline, who are seeing the number of people coming to emergency departments and patients in hospital with viruses like flu, RSV, and norovirus creeping up and continued Covid pressure.
"Demand on hospitals and staff remains high and as we experience more spells of cold weather and people gathering indoors for festive events and end of year celebrations. We expect to see a continued increase in winter viruses spreading in the community and in some cases this will lead to hospital admissions."
NHS data released on Thursday a 53 percent increase of people in hospital with flu, an average of 234 people every day last week.
Meanwhile, hospitalised cases norovirus, the winter vomiting bug, are up 15 percent on the previous week with an average 406 people daily - up 28% on the same week last year.
An average of 92 beds were closed each day last week due to measures to stop the spread of norovirus through hospitals.
There are more cases of RSV in the week up to December 3. There was an average of 146 children were in hospital each day
