Martin Lewis has given his "true" opinion on the long-standing tradition of some parents to give teachers Christmas presents.
The financial expert has taken to Twitter following reports claiming he believes that students giving their teachers a gift to show appreciation should be "banned".
While the Money Saving Expert founder said this is "not his view", he does have "slight worries" on personal and financial pressures it can put on people.
On Thursday, Martin spoke on Times Radio in which he urged people not to suffer from a "massive financial hangover" in the new year from overspending during the holiday.
He added that he's been "campaigning for years" on banning unnecessary Christmas presents for the "ever growing list of family, friends, teachers that we feel obligated to buy for". Following the interview, Lewis share a video later that night to "clear up" views on his opinion.
"So I've just seen some newspaper reports that seem to indicate I think there should be some sort of legislative ban on giving teachers presents. That is not my view," he began.
"Teachers do an amazing job and I know that many people are grateful, but I do have slight worries that when you're talking about individuals giving teachers gifts out of their own pockets, then those with the biggest pockets are able to make teachers more grateful and I mean I'm sure most teachers don't behave in that way, but I too think that sets a moral hazard."
The financial expert highlighted that people are already under financial pressure and may feel even more so if they have to buy presents for one or multiple teachers.
He added: "I also think we have to be vary careful amidst a cost of living crisis that we don't make it a matter of course that people by gifts
