EastEnders' legend Diane Parish is best known for her role as Denise Fox, but actually had a challenging part on the soap before her debut as Denise. Before Denise, Diane played another character on EastEnders, Lola Christie, in 1998, who was introduced as the girlfriend of Walford resident Mick McFarlane, played by Sylvester Williams.
However, she found this role "excruciating." On the TV show, Secrets of The Square, Diane confessed that playing singer Lola was not her cup of tea, saying: "It was the most excruciating role. I don't sing, I'm not a singer and it was horrible!" She recalled a comforting moment with co-star Patsy Palmer, who tried to reassure her about her singing. She said: "Oh, it was awful.
I remember Patsy Palmer came up to me at one point and she goes: 'Oh don't worry, it sounds really good, don't worry about it'. I thought: 'It don't, Patsy!'" Despite Patsy's positivity, Diane admitted that the role wasn't for her. After her first time on EastEnders, she scored roles in popular shows like Holby City and The Bill.
Diane played DC Eva Sharpe in ITV drama The Bill from 2002-2004, which also starred her future on-screen EastEnders husband Scott Maslen as DS Phil Hunter. In 2001, Diane was honoured with the Royal Television Society's best actress award for her standout role in TV series The Babyfather. But in 2006, EastEnders bosses asked her to play Denise - and the rest is history.
