The slightest thing could cause James Riley to see red. Whether his girlfriend didn’t clean to his exacting standards, if a meal was undercooked or overcooked, or if she accidentally spilt a drink, he was prone to an outburst. Ellie Moxham said it was like treading on eggshells around him, as he undermined and criticised her.
But even she could not have predicted how far he would go when he lost it as they spent a night together in a Manchester hotel. And she claims he is still trying to control her while he is behind bars. Riley and Ms Moxham had previously bought tickets for a gig at the Apollo in Manchester.

"For years, James destroyed my self-esteem by making degrading comments about my body and looks, criticising me right down to the simplest things like cooking or cleaning so nothing was ever good enough, and constantly seeking to remind me how superior he was than me at everything and that I couldn’t do anything right,” Ms Moxham said in court as Riley watched on.
