However, with there being so many different types of abuse, it can be very hard to recognise whether or not you are in the midst of an abusive relationship. Below are some things that are actually illegal to do in a relationship, that you may not know.
1) Gaslighting
Described as one of the 'worst forms of abuse', this is done over time and is when someone leads you to question your own reality and makes you think you are losing your mind and doubt yourself. They may then deny they ever said something and it could be over small things such as telling you what they want for dinner and then later saying they said something else.
2) Repeatedly putting you down
The ECHO reports that comments from a partner may not be thought of as abuse but persistent name calling or mocking behaviour is actually illegal.
3) Preventing you from seeing friends or family
If your partner continually isolates you from the people you love, telling you that you cannot see friends or family for whatever reason, this is illegal. This can be in the form of monitoring your calls or not allowing you out the door and coming up with reasons why such as "they aren't good
