Eric Bailly has unpacked how tough he found his seven-year spell at Manchester United after suffering constant injury setbacks under three different managers.
The defender has returned to former club Villarreal after his contract with Besiktas was ended by mutual agreement last week. Just days before, he had been axed from the squad for “poor performance” and “incompatibilities within the team”.
Bailly spent last season on loan at Marseille, but the French club decided against bringing him in on a permanent basis. The 29-year-old left United on a free last summer as he headed to Turkey having not played for the Reds since December 2021.

The Ivorian had hit the ground running when he first arrived at United in 2016 under Jose Mourinho. The then-Villarreal centre-back said he felt he was “hallucinating” when he got a call from the Portuguese manager asking him to relocate to Manchester.
Bailly won man of the match on debut as United beat Leicester to lift the 2016 Community Shield before starting the League Cup triumph over Southampton the following February. He also clasped hands on the Europa League trophy despite being suspended for the final.
The player would endure a number of false dawns amid rotten injury luck that saw him sustain 15 separate injuries during his time at Old Trafford, not including the two sustained at Marseille.
He ultimately started just 67 of his 113 appearances for the club, 37 of which came in his maiden season. “You feel helpless because you can’t change anything when you’re injured,” he told The Athletic.
