A ban on American Bully XL dogs is looking more likely, as the UK Government said it was close to defining the breed.
Environment Secretary Therese Coffey said the UK Government was “in a good place” regarding defining the XL Bully, in light of recent attacks linked to the dogs.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said last month that the breed would be outlawed, following a number of fatal attacks. If the ban does go ahead, the XL Bully would become the fifth to be banned in the UK.
However, the government is resisting calls to overhaul the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. The legislation covers Scotland, England and Wales, with similar rules in Northern Ireland.
Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss said existing XLs would have to be registered, leashed and muzzled in public, and neutered, but would not be culled, reports the Mirror.
There were concerns that the ban would be difficult to enforce as defining the breed could be problematic. However, Ms Coffey told the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee: “I believe we are in a good place of having agreed a definition. We are pretty close to being able to proceed with the legislation and the guidance that would go alongside that in terms of practical implementation.”
Currently, the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro are illegal to own in the UK.
