A man has opened up on his heartbreak after his fiancée died just four days after they got engaged. It was the happiest day of Craig McKinnon's life when Jess Prinsloo agreed to marry him.
He proposed to his soulmate at the God's Window viewpoint during a holiday to South Africa in December 2022 - and she said yes. But the dream trip would soon turn into a life-changing nightmare when Jess, 24, tragically passed away just a few days later, on New Year's Eve, The Mirror reports.
Speaking about the moment they got engaged, Craig, from Salisbury in Wiltshire, said: “Lots of her family live in South Africa and she hadn’t been back in six years, so I knew there was no better place to propose.
“My voice cracked as I got down on one knee and asked, ‘Will you marry me?’ She said, ‘Oh my God’ and started crying before she said 'yes'. The look on her face… it meant everything.”
After the proposal at the renowned Mpumalanga beauty spot and a few days celebrating, Craig and his "gorgeous" fiancée made their way to her mum's home in Johannesburg on December 30.
After arriving, Jess - who has an acute dairy allergy - used the wrong spoon to stir her cup of tea. This caused her to go into anaphylaxis – a potentially fatal reaction causing the throat to close up – within seconds, and she died in hospital the next day.
Jess, a marketing executive, always carried two EpiPens but neither were able to save her. Craig, who brought his beloved's ashes back to the UK two weeks later, said: “When Jess died, a part of me died too – but there is no one to blame for her passing away."
