Voters will soon be hitting the polls on May 5 to have their say in who they want to represent them in their local council.
But not everyone in the UK is allowed to vote in the 2022 local election and there are some steps voters must take before they can vote. To be eligible there are some criteria that must be met relating to citizenship status, age and the area you live in.
If you want to vote in this year's local elections but are unsure of what candidates are in your area, the Electoral Commission has a search tool here where you can search via your postcode.

Find below a breakdown of all the criteria that must be met before you can have your say in the 2022 local elections. First and foremost you must be registered to vote for any election in the UK - you can do so via the government website here .
Unlike Parliamentary general elections, someone in the UK can vote if they hold British, Irish, equal Commonwealth or EU citizenship (excluding the Republic of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus). To be qualified as a Commonwealth citizen it must be from a region that is of British Crown dependency or British Overseas territories.
The Commonwealth citizen must also have leave to enter or remain in the UK or doesn't require that leave. Click this link to find a full list of Commonwealth countries whose citizens are eligible to vote in the local elections.
Meanwhile, an EU citizen is anyone from an EU member country bit including Cyprus and Malta - the full list of which can be found here .
As long as you are over the age of 18 then you can vote in all types of elections in the UK, including this year's local elections.
