Choosing where to live can be one of the most difficult decisions to make when it comes to buying a house. Not only do you have to take into account factors such as local amenities, transport links and proximity to family and friends, but one of the most important things that will influence your choice of location is affordability.
House prices can vary drastically from one area to the next, especially across Greater Manchester. The same type of property can cost almost double depending which part of the region you're looking to buy in, which means house hunters often have to expand their search outside of their usual realm.
Ella Moore, 38, and her partner decided to leave Altrincham after finding a much bigger home for a similar price in Northenden. The couple bought the oldest house on the street for £277,000 - and it's now estimated to be worth around £180,000 more, after undergoing an 'unrecognisable' transformation.

Ella spoke to the Manchester Evening News as part of our Where I Live series. Each week we chat to a different homeowner about their buying and renovation journey; whilst looking inside to see how they've transformed their house from start to finish.
Interior designer Ella, who is originally from London, grew up in Altrincham and, after meeting her now-husband, she moved into his two-bed terrace house. But after outgrowing their old place six years ago, the couple decided to start the search for their first home to buy together, with an old character property in mind.
