British holidaymakers have been issued a travel warning if they are heading to Turkey any time soon, following an outbreak of a serious illness. It has been reported that the condition has broken out at various holiday hotspots in the country, and is linked to Salmonella.
Wales Online reports that an investigation has been launched after nearly 250 cases of a gastrointestinal bug were spotted by the NHS among those who had been on holiday. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), they have detected clusters of a Salmonella strain that they believe is a common source of infection.
Most of the infected people had travelled to and stayed in hotels in the Antalya region of Turkey. The investigation was started after 241 confirmed cases were discovered.
This probe found that many of the people had been residing in all-inclusive hotels where food was supplied in the form of a take-what-you-want buffet. In a new update, the UKHSA said that the source is yet to be found - so they warned holidaymakers heading to Turkey to take extra care.
Authorities have yet to take direct action due to the lack of source, so travellers are expected to take preventative action on their own behalf. Reports claim that 56 per cent of cases in the Salmonella cluster were male, with an average age of 29.
A spokesperson for the UKHSA said: "Report staying in a number of different hotels in Turkey and most cases report eating a wide variety of different foods within their hotel resort as part of an all-inclusive holiday package."
They added: "As the source of illness has not been identified and investigations are ongoing, UKHSA is reminding people of simple steps they can take to reduce the risk of contracting gastrointestinal infections while
