Deadline’s Strike Talk Podcast Week 9: As Actor Contract Ends, Hollywood’s Teamsters Leader Drives Toward Solidarity

Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast is now in its ninth week, coming at a critical day with the expiration of the SAG-AFTRA contract. Deadline has revealed a high likelihood that the union agrees to kick the can down the road and beyond the holidays, but the tension is growing after more than 1000 major actors signed a solidarity letter that they are serious and will go on strike. That development would put every part of Hollywood in a deep sleep, because there will be no one to make projects, or promote the ones that are done. The Emmys also are threatened.

As Emmy Voting Ends, ‘Mo,’ ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Josh Segarra and a Few More Last Minute Choices to Consider

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large If this year’s Emmy ballots are any indication, the era of Peak TV may truly be over — which FX boss John Landgraf has of course been predicting for some time. There are 163 dramas, 95 comedies and 51 limited/anthology series that have been submitted — down from 171 dramas, 118 comedies and 61 limited/anthology series last year. That’s still a lot of TV, but with fewer contenders comes the possibility of more dark horses getting noticed.

6 Burning Questions for Emmy Voting, From ‘Succession’ Dominance to the Comedy Crunch

“Succession” to place multiple nominees in the acting categories: Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin and Matthew McFadyen have all been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the last two seasons, while last year’s guest categories included four actors and three actresses from the HBO series. The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category, meanwhile, has found both Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong nominated for the past two seasons. But this year, with Cox’s character dying in the third episode, Culkin moved from the supporting into the lead category, where he’ll be vying for a nomination alongside Strong and Cox (who opted to remain in lead even though his character is physically missing from most of the season). All three are considered among the favorites to be nominated – but to have three lead actors nominated for the same show would be unprecedented.

Deadline’s Strike Talk Podcast Week 8: WGA Negotiating Committee Scribes Show Resolve After 50-Day Mark

Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast is now at Week 8, as we complete a stretch in which the standoff between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers passed the 50-day mark, halfway to the 100-day dispute that decimated Hollywood in 2007 and the 253-day dispute of 1988.

How ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’ Became a Rare TV Musical to Get the Sound Just Right

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard. Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.

Inside the Emmys Uproar Over ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ That Upended the Limited Series Category 25 Years Ago

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Most of this year’s limited or anthology series Emmy frontrunners had several choices on where to compete. “Dahmer: Monster — The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is part of a new “Monster” anthology series, but it could have gone drama. “Beef” might have found a home in drama or comedy, but landed in limited (same goes for “Mrs. Davis”). All of these series have a trailblazer to thank for the flexibility that comes with the limited/anthology category: HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon.” It’s been 25 years since that landmark miniseries was an Emmy contender — and it’s remarkable to look back at what a controversial decision it was at the time to even call it a “miniseries.”
