How Hollywood Strikes Could Affect Telluride and TIFF: ‘Fall Festivals Are F—ed’

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor “Fall festivals are fucked.” That was one studio executive’s blunt assessment about the impact of an actors’ strike on the rapidly approaching Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals. Showcasing Oscar contenders at these annual events is going to be much more difficult now that SAG-AFTRA has joined the WGA on the picket lines. “You can’t premiere movies anywhere without your stars,” the executive said. “No stars, no movie.” And SAG-AFTRA has made it clear that its members are not to do any promotional activity around their movies until a new contract deal is reached and ratified. So that means that the red carpets that make these festivals massive media events will be significantly less celebrity-studded. So why would studios shell out hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars, to launch a movie at one of these gatherings?

‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Star Hayley Atwell Talks Hanging Off a Train with Tom Cruise and Female Representation in Action Movies

Angelique Jackson It’s 10 a.m. in Sydney, where Hayley Atwell is preparing to walk the red carpet as the “Mission: Impossible” crew’s newest member, joining producer and star Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie’s ensemble of battle-hardened actors. “This is a pure cinematic experience. It’s unadulterated entertainment, and of a huge scale,” Atwell says to Variety about “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which finally hit theaters on July 12 following a two-year delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Flashy events like the Australia premiere (which featured a fireworks spectacle in honor of Cruise’s 61st birthday on July 3) mark the end of a four-year odyssey that pushed Atwell’s limits physically — leaving her hanging inside a train car that’s gone from horizontal to vertical, gripping anything nailed to the floor/wall/ceiling lest she fall to her death (or at least the safety rigging below) — and saw her creating a cunning character within the “M:I” universe.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Kicks Off With $7 Million in Box Office Previews

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” ignited to $7 million on Tuesday previews, a solid start before the film opens nationwide on Wednesday. Comparisons are difficult because “Dead Reckoning Part One” is the first installment in the long-running series to debut on a Wednesday rather than a Friday. But 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” the most recent adventure anchored by Tom Cruise’s teflon operative Ethan Hunt, picked up $6 million in previews before launching to $61 million, a franchise record. For another point of reference, Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” landed $7.2 million in Thursday previews when it opened in advance of July 4th. The action-adventure, starring Harrison Ford, went on to earn $60 million over the traditional weekend and $83.5 million through the five-day holiday frame.

Foo Fighters fool Glastonbury festivalgoers with surprise appearance

Glastonbury Festival on Friday, Foo Fighters took the Pyramid Stage for a surprise appearance that marked the band’s first appearance at the English extravaganza since 2017.It was also the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band’s first full show in the UK since the death of their beloved drummer, Taylor Hawkins, in 2022.Although there were rumors that the ChurnUps were actually the Foos, it wasn’t confirmed until a tweet about an hour before their set.“You guys knew it was us the whole time, didn’t you?” said Foo frontman Dave Grohl. “It’s nice to see your faces again.”And then Foo Fighters launched into an hour-long set that included hits such as “All My Life,” “Learn to Fly,” “The Pretender” and “Best Of You” as well as short covers of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” and the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.”“We’ve only got one hour so we gotta make sure we fit in all the songs we can,” said Grohl. The set included a slow, stripped-down version of “My Hero” that many felt was a tribute to Hawkins, who actually received an official dedication on “Everlong.”But he wasn’t the only dearly departed loved one that the Foo Fighters remembered at Glastonbury.

Jennifer Lopez just got a full fringe for summer, so now we're all about to get full fringes for summer. The 53 year old is known for her ultra-lengthy, caramel-coloured locks – often styled into bombshell waves – and now she's giving that trademark look a bit of a new-season update thanks to the fringe. Not perfectly practical for the heatwave we're having, but maybe it's cooler over in L.A.
