Amanda Barber had been working at McDonald’s when she finally got to check her phone. Three missed calls and two messages.
Her sister’s partner had been trying to contact her all morning. She knew whatever he needed to tell her was serious.
Amanda called him back and he immediately picked up. “She’s gone,” he said. Amanda assumed the pair had been arguing.

“Where’s she gone?” Amanda replied, thinking her sister had just walked out of the house. “No,” he said. “She’s gone, gone.”
Amanda couldn’t comprehend what he was saying. Her little sister, Anne-Marie, had died after going to bed with intense period pains. She was just 39.
“For about 20 minutes, I solid cried,” Amanda told the Manchester Evening News. “I’ve never cried that hard before.
“This is the worst pain and I never want to feel pain like this ever again.”
Anne-Marie passed away after complaining of abdominal pain on the evening of August 18.
The mum-of-one had suffered from endometriosis for many years, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in places like the ovaries and fallopian tubes. It's a severely painful disease and can be debilitating for some.
The former landlady decided to take some painkillers and went to bed hoping she would feel better in the morning.
But when her partner went to check on her later that evening, he couldn’t wake her up.
“He realised she wasn’t breathing and did all he could to administer CPR,” Amanda, 41, said.
“He rang an ambulance and they came and took her to hospital. They worked on her for a bit but it was too late.”
