Two areas in Greater Manchester have been named amongst the top 20 'Best Places to Live' in 2024. The report, published on Monday (February 12) by buying agents Garrington Property Finders, ranks the best 1,400 cities, towns and villages across England and Wales.

Greater Manchester is surrounded by miles upon miles of breathtaking countryside; there’s so much of it to see that it can be hard to fit it all in - but heading out on a weekend walk seems like a good place to start. If you’re looking for a scenic stroll to fill your Saturday or Sunday then read on.
The picturesque village of Tintwistle sits on the edge of the Peak District, only a half hour drive from Greater Manchester. Tintwistle is brimming with rural charm; it has a 16th century pub, The Bull’s Head, a grade II-listed church and even stocks on the village green.
Tintwistle is also the gateway to the Longdendale valley, home to a string of reservoirs: Bottoms, Valehouse, Rhodeswood, Torside and Woodhead. Running alongside the reservoirs is the Longdendale Trail, which runs for 6.5miles from neighbouring Hadfield all the way to the Woodhead Tunnel.

You can pick up the trail at Bottoms reservoir, just outside of Tintwistle. The trail follows the Trans-Pennine railway route, which closed in 1981.
It’s easy to follow and relatively flat, although the trail is open to the elements so make sure you’re well prepared if the weather turns. The route is also open to cyclists if that’s more your thing, and thanks to a slight incline you'll benefit from a downhill slope on the return journey.
Along the way take the time to stop and admire the tranquil reservoir views. The beauty of the trail is that you can make your walk as long or as short as you want.
Round off your walk by returning back to Tintwistle, stopping by the Bull’s Head for a well-deserved drink and hearty pub meal. There are two car parks nearby: Tintwistle (SK13 1ND) and Padfield (SK13 1DY).
