On the edge of Stockport, Marple Bridge is a picturesque village packed full of hidden gems. Only a short train ride from Manchester, it feels a world away from the buzz of the city.
Among Marple Bridge’s delights are the quaint cottages of Low Lea Road, the spectacular Marple Locks and the Roman Lakes. The village’s food and drink scene is thriving too, with a slew of cafes, pubs and delis along Town Street.
While walking along the canal is a popular route, you may not be aware of the scenic park which lies right beside it. Nestled between the River Goyt and the Peak Forest Canal, Brabyns Park is Maple’s largest park, featuring a mixture of parkland, woodland, riverside walks and playing fields.

The park began life as an estate attached to Brabyns Hall, a Georgian house built in around 1750. The hall was passed between various families and was even used as a military hospital in the First World War. In the 1940s the estate was bought by Cheshire County Council, and the park was first opened to the public in 1947, but the hall was demolished in 1953.
Today the park is part of the Marple Conservation Area, having been incorporated in 2006. Although the hall is long gone, there are a few clues to the park’s history, including a gorgeous Grade II-listed iron bridge which was built in 1813.
Located at the north end of Brabyns Park, the bridge crosses the River Goyt and was restored to its former glory in 2012 thanks to a lottery grant. At the entrance to the park is an old gardener’s lodge, but this is now privately owned.
