A group of dedicated City fans have been working to uncover the history of the cross, and verify that it was in fact the first official badge of the club stretching way back to 1884. Now, they say they have confirmation that the 'cross pattee' badge has genuine links to the early days of Manchester City Football Club.

The early days of the club that would become Manchester City are generally well-known, but not extensively researched. The origins of 'St Marks (West Gorton) from the church of the same name, into West Gorton (St Marks), to West Gorton FC, then Gorton AFC, Ardwick AFC, then Manchester City in 1894 is a journey most fans may be aware of. The stories behind that evolution, not so much.
The St Marks (West Gorton) group - made up of four supporters - are hoping to change that, starting with some myth-busting around the stories that aren't quite historically accurate. For one, it was thought that the club had origins in freemasonry, and that the cross on the first ever badge on the club's shirts was a 'Maltese cross'. Both ideas, the group say, are untrue, with no evidence of Freemasons having any influence in the early days of the club back in the 1880s.
