While good hygiene and face masks are a great way to avoid bugs, there's also a disgusting reason why you should always have one on while in a public toilet.
Scientists have discovered exactly why it is important to stick a face mask on before heading into the loo - and the reason will gross you out.
A study has found that flushing toilets and urinals in public toilets can release clouds of spray containing viruses - including Covid - within five seconds.
This timing is compared to a normal toilet at your house, which takes 35 seconds to spread - which means that particles laced with viruses could land on you, your hands and even your face within seconds of flushing.
Chinese scientists at Yangzhou University have created and tracked the movements of air-borne viruses when loos are flushed.
Their findings, published in the journal Physics of Fluids last year, have shown that public toilets can be "dangerous" places for becoming infected.
Urinals are used more often in densely populated areas, as researchers warned that these particles can travel faster and father, which poses a "serious public health challenge."
The team said their findings underline how important it is to wear a mask within public places.
Researcher Dr Xiangdong Liu said: "We used a method of computational fluid dynamics to model the particle movement that occurs with the act of flushing.
"The specific models are the volume of fluids model and discrete phase model."
De Liu added: "The climbing speed is much faster than toilet flushing.
