Last month, a new waterfront food and drink destination with a host of exciting food traders opened at Salford Quays. Part of a wider £3.5 million transformation of the waterfront stretch at Quayside MediaCity, Central Bay is one of the biggest operations of its kind - not only in Greater Manchester, but the North of England.
Named after the original stretch of dock which was once a bustling loading bay during the industrial revolution, Central Bay sits at the heart of a number of Salford landmarks, which can be admired from its south-facing outside terrace, providing space for up to 600 visitors. The 25,000 sq ft venue encompasses a massive food hall called Kargo Mkt with 20 operators and space for 400 people, plus a a shipping container bar.
A few weeks after launching, five new kitchens have joined the fray offering up everything from Brazilian-Mexican fusion street food and South Indian specialities to authentic Chinese noodles. The new additions have taken up residency in specially adapted waterside shipping container kitchens below Central Bay’s outside terraces.

The five new kitchens were discovered via Kargo MKT’s Future Food Stars programme, which aims to provide a launchpad for emerging food vendors to build their businesses. As part of the initiative, the businesses will also receive mentoring on how to establish good business practices and operating systems, as well as coaching on how to develop, build, and market their brand.
