TV presenter and Capital Radio DJ Roman Kemp is having a busy summer. As well as making a documentary series about young footballers, entitled Boot Dreams, he has also filmed a new BBC daytime quiz show called The Finish Line, which he co-hosts with legendary former Blue Peter presenter Sarah Greene. However, although Sarah was a household name throughout the 80s, Roman admits he didn’t know who she was when they first met.
“I met up with the guys making the show at the BBC and Sarah was sat there,” the 30-year-old tells OK!. “And at the end of the meeting, she says to me, ‘Sweetie, I’m so looking forward to it,’ and only then did I realise it was her! “The generational difference between us is so nice. It has created this bond between us as we are playing to two different audiences.” The show sees contestants speed across a racetrack as each correct answer pushes them closer to the jackpot prize.
With Roman and Sarah dishing out the questions, each player is betting on their brainpower to make it to the titular finish line before their competitors do. Ahead of filming the new format, Roman asked his famous parents, Martin and Shirley Kemp, to explain Sarah’s TV career. And it turns out that the Spandau Ballet singer and his Pepsi & Shirlie wife were well acquainted with their son’s new colleague.
“My mum and dad were both interviewed by Sarah on the kids’ show Saturday Superstore,” he says. “They were there quite a lot.” He also discovered a very bizarre connection between Sarah and Shirlie – and it involves the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. “There’s a famous interview that Sarah did with Margaret Thatcher,” he explains.
