Dry January — abstaining from alcoholic drinks for a month — as a way to reset health priorities after the holidays or as a test run for an alcohol-free lifestyle. And now there’s also “Damp January,” which can mean whatever you want it to but often involves cutting down to weekend-only drinking or trying lower-proof alternatives. Much of the interest is fueled by Gen Z, who want the style and flavor of cocktails to fit into their zero-proof lifestyles.

The time has come for former President Barack Obama to share his end-of-year lists, and for his millions of followers on social media to speculate whether he really watched all those movies, read all those books, listened to all of those songs and binged all those shows. As I usually do during this time of year, I wanted to share my favorite books, movies, and music of 2023.First up, here are the books I've enjoyed reading.
Arguably one of the best Christmas chick flick movies with some of the best actors, The Holiday is many people’s favourite annual Christmas movie. Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law star in the film which follows the lives of LA-based movie producer Amanda and Surrey-based Iris, who decide to swap homes over the Christmas holidays, after both experienced disaster in their love lives. Amanda meets Iris' brother Graham (Jude), with whom she falls in love, whilst Iris forms a firm friendship with Miles (Jack Black) - although it's not clear if the relationship is romantic. The movie ends with the foursome enjoying a wholesome Christmas with Graham's two daughters at his home in England.
Oppenheimer”).During the simultaneous Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes, the sagging box office was boosted, like NFL ratings and the economy of East Rutherford, New Jersey, by Taylor Swift.Marvel Studios, which used to be the surest thing in Hollywood, began to underperform (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”) and then downright flop (“The Marvels”).And DC was revealed to actually stand for Dud Central, with all of the studio’s comic-book films of 2023 (“Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash” and “Blue Beetle”) turning out to be financial failures. In a win for Gen Z, studio execs determined Zendaya’s star wattage is so huge now that two of her movies — “Dune: Part 2” and “Challengers” — were delayed a year due to the strikes, so she can promote them to her hoards of fans. And baby boomers were dinged by the big-time tanking of the nostalgic “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” starring a now 81-year-old Harrison Ford who schlepped around New York and Europe.Despite all the madness — and a sea of schlock — some excellent films hit theaters this year.
