Sony Sets Summer 2025 Release For Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later’

28 Years Later has begun filming in the North-east this week according to a new report in The Knowledge.News of the new film was first announced earlier this year, with confirmation that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, who helmed the 2002 original 28 Days Later, were both returning to the franchise. 28 Years Later will be the first of a follow-up trilogy to the original films.Cillian Murphy was also recently confirmed as returning to the franchise that launched his career.Earlier this month, the film was given the official release date of June 20, 2025.

After much hemming and hawing and a little bit of teases about his appearance, Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy has been confirmed for Sony’s “28 Years Later” horror thriller. Sony chief Tom Rothman revealed the news in a new interview with Deadline.

The horror genre is off to a strong start in 2024 thanks to films like “Immaculate,” “Abigail,” and “In A Violent Nature.” But 2025 is already shaping out to be a banner year, with many genre entries getting new theatrical premiere dates this week. So what’s next year’s most anticipated horror movie on the docket? It could be Sony‘s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” remake, which THR reports will hit theaters on July 18, 2025.

Ireland’s screen industry is having a moment. Depicting a dystopian future America, the film’s story follows a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach Washington DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.
