Sinead O'Connor was 'found unresponsive' at London home as police issue statement after death aged 56

Police have said Sinead O'Connor was 'found unresponsive' at her London home after her shock death was confirmed. News broke of the singer's tragic passing, aged 56, on Wednesday night (July 26).
The Grammy-winner was propelled to international stardom in 1990 with her version of the hit ballad Nothing Compares 2 U. However, she was arguably as well known for being outspoken about her social and political views as for her musical talent. She had recently returned to the capital after a long absence.
A statement from O’Connor’s family, reported by RTE and The Irish Times, confirmed O'Connor's death and said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

On Thursday (July 17), police confirmed that O'Connor had been found unresponsive at a home in south-east London and pronounced dead at the scene. The death of the iconic Irish star is not being treated as suspicious.
A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at 11.18hrs on Wednesday 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the SE24 area. Officers attended. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene."
The statement added: "Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
