Angelique Jackson Sheryl Lee Ralph has delivered one rousing acceptance speech after another, all awards season long. But the newly crowned Emmy, Critics Choice and Golden Globe-winner saved something special for Essence’s 16th annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon on Thursday afternoon. Presented the award by her “Abbott Elementary” co-star and creator — and 2022 Essence Black Women in Hollywood honoree — Quinta Brunson, Ralph whipped the audience into a frenzy with a 13-minute speech that ranged from an subdued, yet soul-stirring rendition of “Endangered Species” to an impassioned rallying cry to remember who paved the way for where Black women in the industry have come from and where we’re going.
“I have joy. I have happiness. I have love that I get to share with all of you. Just looking at you, and looking at you, I tell you this all the time,” she said, turning briefly to Brunson. “The fight to get all of you here, looking the way you look, celebrating you in the positions that you are doing what you are doing, it was some backbreaking work,” she continued as the audience, assembled in the ballroom of the Fairmont Century City, erupted in applause. “It was some spirit-breaking work. It was hard, but generations held on.” With no music attempting to play her off stage, the guests — made up mostly of Black women actors, filmmakers, publicists, executives and journalists (like Yara Shahidi, Chinonye Chukwu, Marsai Martin, Dominique Fishback, Lena Waithe, Teyana Taylor, Ruth E. Carter, Vivica A. Fox, Niecy Nash-Betts, Tia and Tamera Mowry and Amazon’s Latasha Gillespie, with a few men including emcee Boris Kodjoe, Larenz Tate and presenters Ryan Coogler and Daniel Kaluuya) — listened with rapt attention. “Rosalind

Selome Hailu SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for all episodes of “Swarm” on Amazon Prime Video. Rumors of a Donald Glover project about a “Beyoncé-like figure” have been swirling in Hollywood for at least two years. And while no one involved will say Knowles’ name — though Glover has called out the Beyhive and co-creator and showrunner Janine Nabers has spoken about “a certain pop star from Houston” — that series is finally here. “Swarm” stars Dominique Fishback as Dre, an emotionally stunted superfan of a singer named Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown), who is a bit unhealthily obsessed with her own sister, Marissa (Chloe Bailey). When a fight between the sisters separates them for a night, Dre goes out to celebrate Ni’Jah’s surprise album drop (clearly inspired by “Lemonade,” in which Beyoncé sings about being cheated on) while Marissa discovers that she’s being cheated on by her boyfriend, Khalid (Damson Idris). Unable to reach Dre for support, she dies by suicide.

But what kind of pressure does that put on the rest of the cast and crew? This Oscar season, there are a lot of so-called passion projects that have received accolades. Among them: “The Fabelmans,” a family story that was inspired by director and co-writer Steven Spielberg’s own parents; “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a script that writer-director Martin McDonagh spent years perfecting set in an era in Irish history that few outsiders might know about; and the Marvel movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” for which director and co-writer Ryan Coogler had to follow the success of the film’s predecessor, 2018’s “Black Panther” while doing justice to its late star, Chadwick Boseman.
