Fire chiefs have revealed that a second fire in a week at the Station Hotel was discovered under a "large quantity of debris."
Crews were last night back tackling another blaze at the historic hotel which was left gutted after a major inferno last Monday. Exactly a week on since the huge fire ripped through the Victorian B-listed building, emergency crews were back at the scene.
This time just two appliances were required as firefighters were spotted entering the dangerous building.
It has now emerged that the fire was discovered by crews who were carrying out routine checks a week on since flames took grip of the abandoned Ayr hotel.
And they have given an insight into the current state of the inside of the building - after last week's fire burned for more than 24 hours.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We mobilised two appliances to the site of Ayr's Station Hotel after a small fire was discovered by crews during routine checks shortly after 4pm on Monday, 2 October, under a large quantity of debris.
"Crews extinguished the fire and thereafter left the scene.
"Firefighters will revisit the site to assess the area."
A Council spokesperson said: "Yesterday, during routine checks, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) discovered a small fire within the former Station Hotel building. This has now been extinguished. SFRS will revisit the site to assess the area."
