Manchester’s giant Santa Claus landed in St Peter’s Square this morning after construction teams battled the elements to welcome him in.
The 20-metre-tall Father Christmas forms the centrepiece of Manchester’s festive displays, and sits next to smaller sculptures featuring bees with Christmas hats on. The installation on Monday (November 13) comes days after the annual Christmas Markets opened on Friday (November 10).
The nine market sites were busier than ever, according to Pat Karney. Coun Karney is the man in charge of the council’s celebrations, including the new Toy Parade on December 3.

“I was there [at the Markets] on Friday night at St Ann’s Square, it was wall-to-wall people,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “Across the nine sites, we had the record attendance. I think there’s so much grim news in the world, people just want to be cheered up."
Work on building the structure started in front of the Central Library yesterday afternoon, and resumed at roughly 7am this morning. Staff from the council, which owns and maintains the massive Father Christmas, built it in sections on the ground before using a crane to lift the torso and head into place.
That is all possible because this Santa is significantly lighter than Zippy, the previous Father Christmas. This year is also set to be the last that Mancs will be able to see him in St Peter’s Square, with the renovation of Albert Square and the Town Hall set to be complete by Christmas 2024 — so it’s hoped he can move back to his original home.
