Former defender Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United would struggle to bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City next season, even if they signed Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves this summer.
United, who will be going in search of a third successive win when they face Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday, are set to prioritise the addition of a holding midfield player in this summer's transfer window.
The club has long since pinpointed West Ham ace Declan Rice as their number one target, but reports elsewhere have connected them with Leicester City midfielder Tielemans and Wolves star Neves, among others.
Tielemans is out-of-contract at Leicester in the summer of 2023 — meaning he could be available in a cut-price deal in 2022.
Neves, meanwhile, has attracted plenty of rave reviews and admiration from United fans for his performances with his Wolves.
But even though Ferdinand believes they are both good players in their own right, he does not think they would help United make the progress they're planning to.
"That wouldn't be my choice, I have got to be honest," Ferdinand told Vibe with Five when asked if a midfield-three of Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans and Neves would work at Old Trafford.
"I like them and they are good players, but if you think that midfield is getting you closer to the other teams, I would argue against it.
"Mobility-wise, we would be lacking."
On Neves specifically, Ferdinand added: "I like him. He keeps the ball and keeps it as well as anyone. He is a really good footballer."
