According to Bowel Cancer UK, the disease is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 42,000 cases diagnosed each year.
The majority of bowel cancer cases are diagnosed in older adults, with 94 percent of people over the age of 50, and 59 percent of these patients over the age of 70.
However, this disease can impact people of all ages and it's important to be on the lookout for any red flag symptoms. Bowel cancer signs can be easily missed, as people put the symptoms down to just getting older or other harmless illnesses.
Catching bowl cancer - as well as many other cancers - early could save your life.
These are the red flag symptoms of bowel cancer to keep an eye out for and never ignore, according to the NHS.
If you have any of these symptoms for three or more weeks, you should schedule a doctors appointment to rule out bowel cancer.
It is important to remember that any or all of these symptoms are likely to be due to a something much less serious, however it is vital to make an appointment to rule out anything serious.
Doctors will tend to ask about your family history of bowel cancer during an appointment. The doctor will also likely examine your bottom and abdomen to check for any lumps.
While this might sound like an awkward trip to the GP, it is often a life-saving test and is very quick.
The GP may also take a blood test to see if you have iron deficiency anaemia. Although most people with bowel cancer do not have symptoms of anaemia, they may lack iron as a result of bleeding from the cancer.
