The 10 Best Love Triangle Movies

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s enthralling sports opera about three great-looking tennis stars who trade partners, is the latest movie to feature that time-honored configuration, the love triangle. And make no mistake: This one is complicated. It’s no mere either/or thing.

‘Boy Kills World’ Review: Bill Skarsgård Plays a Deaf-Mute Avenger in an Action Film So Ultraviolent It’s Like ‘John Wick’ Gone ‘Clockwork Orange’

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic In “Boy Kills World,” Bill Skarsgård has burning eyes and model cheekbones, sinewy arms popping out of a dirty red athletic vest, and a feral pout that make him look like Jean-Claude van Damme crossed with Lou Reed. He plays a deaf-mute avenger, known only as Boy, who kills people in insanely violent ways. Yet through it all, the character retains his innocence.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Any photographer who shoots what’s happening in the gleaming, raw, people-packed carnival of New York City — the stores and walls and towers and alleyways, the celebrities, the endless cross-section of humanity — already has an artistic leg up. But the other leg is what he or she does with it. Weegee shot the violent night world of sin and crime.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Says Streamer Has “No Appetite To Make Fewer Films”

This week’s release of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” (read our review) puts many of Netflix’s problems into sharp focus. Reportedly costing around $166 million to make for both films, arguably much less expensive than some big Marvel and “Star Wars” that cost around $200 million each, it’s still a significant figure for movies that have been met with massive critical derision.

‘Rebel Moon: Scargiver’ Review: Zack Snyder’s Excruciatingly Slight Sequel Barely Justifies A ‘Part 2’

Filmmaker Zack Snyder’s profoundly unfortunate “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire,” a turgid, ostentatiously vacant space opera, was, to put it politely, a dire film and hollow regurgitation of familiar sci-fi tropes. But it at least had a story with three bare acts, however tedious.

What’s next for director Zack Snyder after his upcoming “Rebel Moon” part two sci-fi sequel? While the genre filmmaker has teased a possible third installment in the series, Snyder still has various projects in the oven and is still mulling over what gets made from that pack of contenders, including a sequel to his “Army Of The Dead” zombie movie. During a recent chat with Games Radar to promote the second half of “Rebel Moon,” Snyder was asked about some of the previous projects he had in development, such as a film inspired by the King Arthur mythology (Snyder is a big fan of John Boorman’s R-rated “Excalibur”), Horse Latitudes (a long-gestating Afghan War pic formerly known as “The Last Photograph”), and his sexualized take on Alexander The Great in “Blood & Ashes” too (Snyder once mused about making a George Washington action film).

‘Back to Black’ Review: Marisa Abela Nails Amy Winehouse in Every Look, Mood and Note in a Biopic at Once Forthright and Forbidding

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Back to Black,” the 2006 album that the new Amy Winehouse biopic takes its title from, is a record built on an exquisite contradiction. The music has a crispy delicious retro-bop bounce, a quality that extends to Winehouse’s vocals, which take the growling-cat stylings of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday and kick them up into something playfully ferocious. Yet when you tune into the lyrics, they’re as dark as midnight.
