With the news that King Charles is due to be treated in hospital for an enlarged prostate, many people are wondering what the condition entails.
Buckingham Palace said the King's condition is benign but he will undergo a "corrective procedure". However it's crucial that we all keep an eye on our health - and it's sparked a debate that many people may not know the signs and symptoms when it comes to prostate cancer.
Michael Blakemore-Carson from Patient Claim Line has spoken out about the cancer and what people should be on the look out for. So what should you know? Read below to find out more.
Michael Blakemore-Carson, Senior Litigation Executive at Patient Claim Line said that the main symptoms of prostate cancer all relate to peeing.
He explains: "As the tumour grows, it can press on the nearby urethra, which can lead to a feeling of having to force the pee out, a weak flow, and a dribbling finish. This difficulty in emptying the bladder can also mean that there is a need to pee much more often, and waking several times in the night to go.
"There can also be episodes of a sudden need to pee with some leaking before getting to the toilet, known as urge incontinence."
"A blood test should be taken to look at the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels" the expert said. If the level is raised, then an MRI scan should be requested.
"A doctor or nurse may also perform a digital rectal examination so that they can physically feel if the prostate is enlarged. If the MRI shows anything of concern, a biopsy will be taken to test for cancer cells" he added.
