Prince Harry reportedly had an outburst after Prince William confessed he 'didn't want to be king'. Despite their close bond as children, the now-estranged royal brothers have always been on different life paths.
William's future was prescribed from birth, being an heir to the throne, whereas Harry's life has been less certain as the spare - a term which became famous as the title of his tell-all 2023 memoir. Interestingly, their late mother Diana, Princess of Wales believed that Harry would make a better king, according to a Royal expert.
She even had a secret nickname for him. However, she never revealed why she thought her youngest son would be a better fit for the top job.
It's said that William often told her that "he didn't want to be king'." To which, a young Harry is reported to have responded: "If you don't want the job I'll have it." This led to Diana privately calling Harry GKH - or Good King Harry, says Royal expert Robert Jobson. He shared this on the Channel 5 programme William and Harry: Princes At War, saying: "She used to refer to Harry as GKH (Good King Harry) because she thought he'd probably be better equipped for the role in the future than William." TV presenter Jeremy Paxman shared that Princess Diana discussed her sons' futures during a lunch meeting.
He said: "We talked about our children and she said William often told her that he didn't really want to be king, and then Harry would say, 'If you don't want the job I'll have it'."
