Having a long-term or lifelong medical condition often requires a great deal of prescription juggling, such as having to figure out when your medication might run out and when you will next be able to make it to your pharmacy for a refill. But there are a few days every year when planning goes out the window and the NHS finds itself swamped by requests for prescriptions.
The NHS's non urgent 111 number is swamped with people caught short unexpectedly every Bank Holiday, with many leaving their refills until the national day off, not realising that their pharmacy has closed for the day as well. This can leave patients panicking that they might run out of their essential treatments.
Easter gets the worst of it, with call handlers seeing a 250 per cent increase in people seeking repeat prescriptions when they have other people to triage and find medical care for. This has led the North West's pharmacy boss Karen O’Brien to call on people with these regular medications to plan ahead of this year's Easter Bank Holidays, which are on Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1.

Pharmacy lead O’Brien is advising patients that any repeat prescriptions due in the days over the Easter Bank Holiday (March 29 to April 1) will need to be ordered no later than Wednesday March 20, if you need them to be filled. This is essential to help the NHS relieve pressure on their call centres over the busy Easter period.
Karen O'Brien said: “Keeping your medicine cabinets stocked, knowing when your GP practice is open and planning ahead for repeat prescriptions, people can ensure they make the most of the Easter Bank Holiday.
