Thousands of disabled children and young people across Scotland will receive a one-off payment for £251.50 later this year to help with higher heating bills during the 2024/25 winter season. The Scottish Government has now confirmed all the new payment rates for devolved benefits and payments, including the Child Winter Heating Payment.
The devolved payment will be worth £151.50 next winter, an increase of £15.80 on the £235.70 payments received by an estimated 29,000 families since November 2023 to help them with higher costs during the colder months. Payments are expected to be made around the same time this year.
The £251.50 lump sum is automatically paid to families of children and young people up to the age of 19 who already get certain levels of qualifying disability benefits. These include the highest rate of the care component of Child Disability Payment or Disability Living Allowance for Children.
Those receiving the enhanced rate of the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or the enhanced rate of the daily living component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP), will also qualify for the winter help.
It’s too early in the year to confirm the qualifying period, but it’s usually the third week in September, which this year is 16 - 22, 2024. Social Security Scotland sends eligible families letters nearer the time to confirm their entitlement.
The money is paid into the same account where the qualifying benefit is paid into. Nobody on a qualifying benefit needs to apply separately to get the payment, however, in certain circumstances some people may need to apply - find out more about this here.
The payment is per child or young person, not per household and if more than one child or young
