Netflix drama One Day has become one of the most-watched shows on the streamer since debuting this month, catapulting rising star Jonny Weldon to fame. However, the actor - who plays Ian in the series - nearly missed out on the role. Appearing on ITV's Lorraine this morning, Jonny revealed that he wasn't going to audition for Netflix's adaptation of David Nicholls' book until his wife Lucy urged him to go for the role.
Jonny, 31, explained that he heard about the role whilst the couple were on holiday. "We were in the Isle of Arran and it was one of those holidays where it was turn off your phone, turn off your email," he told Lorraine Kelly. "It came through and I was about to start a theatre job around a similar time.
"My agent said, 'If you're a bit busy, if you're on holiday, just think about it.' I told my wife it was for David Nicholls' One Day and she went, 'You are auditioning for that. It's my favourite book.'" Jonny added that he had to film his audition tape from his hotel. "It was a self-tape so I had to get 30 books from this hotel room and prop my phone on it.
And then I had about 100 recalls and then I got it." Netflix's One Day follows the relationship between aspiring writer Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and privileged graduate Dexter (Leo Woodall) over the course of 20 years. Jonny plays the role of Ian - Emma's boyfriend and hopeful stand-up comic - in the series. In real life, Jonny is married to actress Lucy Weldon.
The pair tied the knot in March last year after four years together.
